Differences between LED screens

There are several important parameters that differentiate between LED devices:

• pixel pitch indicates the distance between the light-emitting diodes, the closer they are to each other, the clearer the image on the screen. Measured on a scale from 10 (maximum distance between LEDs) to 1 (minimum distance);
• application area. Outdoor and indoor;
• screen shape. The surface of the screen can be flat or curved. Flexible LED screens allow you to create optimal viewing angle, place the screen on an uneven surface, etc. The flexible LED display is a perfect solution for concert halls and shopping centers with non-standard architecture;
• light-emitting diodes. Nowadays it’s between DIP and SMD. Read the following paragraphs for the details.

What are the differences between outdoor and indoor LED?

Outdoor LED screens differ from their interior counterpart — they have weather and dirt protection. External LED displays are on most of the day, so it is important that they are protected from water and temperature changes.

LED DISPLAY MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES

RGB LED displays are popular devices for demonstration of various visual content. The image is displayed trough semiconductor LEDs (DIP or SMD). It’s is a diverse technology with a lot of variations — for example, a transparent LED screen (light-emitting diodes are embedded in transparent multi-layer panel) is gaining popularity.

DIP and SMD — what’s the difference?

The DIP and SMD LEDs are significantly different from each other.

DIP (Direct In-line Package) is an older technology, the crystals of red, green and blue diodes are separated. Nowadays DIP is used less and less due to outdated fasteners (the LED is attached to the board with long impractical contacts), lower image quality and a number of other disadvantages. However, it is worth noting the high brightness and relatively low power consumption of this parts.

SMD (Surface Mount Device) is a more modern version of light-emitting diode, three crystals are combined under one lens. Therefore, it takes up less space, the minimum possible distance between the LEDs is reduced, which means that the picture quality improves. SMD does not have contacts, so it is attached directly to the board. Due to the high image quality, SMD displays are used for interior decoration, and (with proper protection) — as outdoor devices.
